Learn how to turn a drab porch into a fab porch with this easy porch makeover!
I am one of those people who looks at my house and wonders how I could cheaply rearrange furniture or reorganize stuff! When I was a kid I moved my bedroom around at least three times a year. I always had to make room for the different holidays and seasons decorations. Yes I was the one who put a small tree up in my room every Christmas. I thought if I can’t afford to buy new things, I will just rearrange them. It will make it new and fresh!
I felt this way when I looked at my porch and realized how drab it felt. I knew I could do something else with the items I already had.
I wanted to plant some flowers somewhere but pots are not cheap, then you have to buy plants, and soil. So I did the next best thing, I repurposed items.
I looked at the milk can I had and thought it would make a great planter! I had bought this milk can several years ago at a small antique store in Kansas but had never done much with it. Three moves and three states later I thought I needed to give it a new purpose. I had some leftover soil from another project and then grabbed some plants I thought would add color and depth to the porch.
The plants I chose are three different types of sweet potato vine. The ‘Blackie’, the ‘Marguerite’, and the ‘Sweet Caroline Bronze’. Although they are all sweet potato vines, they each have their own unique color and therefore add such depth to any planter or pot.
If you don’t know what sweet potato vine looks like when it gets bigger click here. They can bush out and trail down the sides of planters and pots. It is beautiful!
Next, I decided to write on my handmade chalkboard. To make it, I took an old cabinet door and painted the edges with a sage and cream color to give it a vintage feel. I then painted the inset of the cabinet door with chalkboard paint. I am now able to write on it with chalk! Set it on a plant stand, lean it up a against wall, or even hang it and you have something you can personalize. Either for holidays, sports, or even with just your last name.
I finally took a flag that I had a little further down and moved it closer to kind of just finish of the little corner (I’m due for a new one as this one’s fading fast)!
In total I spent less than $10 to makeover this little nook!
I love repurposing old pieces to give them a new life!
